Google likes to keep us on our toes. The rules around SEO are ever changing and just when we think we’ve cracked it, along comes another algorithm change that often has a far reaching consequences.
One such change by Google in recent years has been to penalise sites that pack too many keywords onto a page, a practice known as keyword stuffing.
Here’s one such example of an American car website, as identified by Search Engine Land.

Now, even the biggest technological troglodytes amongst you will know that it is vital to get in important information about your product and your location into your website content. However, it really isn’t necessary to repeat this information 20 times in one sentence. It won’t work and you won’t rank well for those keywords.
The highlighted Dallas Toyota paragraph is, let’s be honest, dreadful. Yet, there are hundreds of websites out there with content written like this throughout their sites.
In simple terms, the answer is to have conversational content on your website. They easiest way to check this is to read your content aloud. Does it sound weird and clunky? Does it read in the same way that you’d actually say those words in a conversation? If it sounds wrong then, chances are, it is wrong.
Of course, you still need to use the correct keywords in the correct density (around 2-4% of the copy) and you still need to cover the basics: optimizing your title tags, meta, H1s, alt text and so on but if your content is utter garbage then none of this will have any effect.
Read it out loud and if it sounds great then you’re onto a winner – with both Google and your website users.
